Why do we need to filter water before drinking

Everyone knows that water is a colorless liquid and that our bodies are made up of anywhere between 60-70% of water. This statistic tells us that drinking water is pretty important for our well-being because the majority of our body is made up of water.

Importance of water filtration

Many people are still uneducated about the dangers of drinking unfiltered water. Unfiltered water can look and smell the same as filtered water. This sometimes makes it close to impossible to distinguish one from the other without close examination.

Unfiltered water can contain dirt, minerals, chemicals and other impurities which can make it smell and taste bad. There are plenty of microscopic bacteria which can have serious consequences to a person's health if ingested. Filtering water gets rid of this risk by making water safe to drink.

Water from taps usually contains small traces of chlorine which makes the water smell funky as well as taste acidic. Filtering water gets rid of all the chlorine present in the water as well as other chemicals which result in the water smelling and tasting a lot better than it would have had it stayed unfiltered. It may also play a role in preventing rectal and colon cancer as unfiltered water has been shown to play a role in causing rectal and colon cancer.

Why should we drink purified water

There are plenty of reasons as to why everyone should drink purified water. Here’s a couple of them.

  1. It is much cheaper than bottled water – It is hard to ignore the financial benefits of drinking filtered water over bottled water. Even if you can cover the costs of bottled water, it can be very inconvenient in the long run. Having a water filter installed at home means that you will have access to clean water 24 hours a day seven days a week.

  2. Purified water helps prevent birth defects – Many researchers have advised pregnant women to drink only filtered water while they are pregnant. This is because the toxins present in unfiltered water can lead to a child having a disability while the child grows. This is entirely preventable by drinking purified water.

  3. Children benefit a lot from filtered water – Unfiltered water has many harmful toxins present in it. If a large enough quantity is ingested, it can harm a child’s organs while they are still developing. It can even present itself as multiple growth irregularities. Filtered water has even been observed to build a child’s immunity rather than keep it as is.

  4. It is much better for the planet – Bottles left over after bottled water has been drunk has to be thrown away. These bottles are often made from plastic which has been shown to have terrible consequences for the planet. Even if the material is a recyclable material, the cost of processing the material into something that can be used again still has a price that the planet pays. Using a water filtration system removes the trash and transport aspect of bottled water.

  5. It is better for people who are trying to lose weight – Drinking clean water makes your body absorb fewer carbohydrates and sugar than its unfiltered counterpart. People with weight problems are strongly recommended to consume more water than a person with a body of an average size. It is much easier to maintain your weight if you drink clean water rather than unfiltered water.

How do water filters work

Water filters use two different techniques in order to remove dirt and other impurities from water. The two methods that different water filters use are called –

  • Physical filtration – In this technique, water is strained in order to remove the larger impurities.

  • Chemical filtration – In this technique, water passes through an active material which removes impurities on a chemical level.

Water filters are further divided into four sub-types which use different mixtures of physical and chemical filtration.

  1. Activated carbon – Most filters used in households use this type of filtration system. They use activated carbon granules which are based on charcoal.

  2. Reverse osmosis – Reverse osmosis works by forcing water which is contaminated through a membrane which is actually a very fine filter. This ensures the water passes through and the contaminants are left behind.

  3. Ion exchange – Ion exchange filters are used to soften water. Softening water refers to removing the chemical limescale. Ion exchange filters split atoms apart to make ions. They trap these ions and exchange them with good ions of their own.

  4. Distillation – Many people boil water in order to make it safe to drink. However, boiling water doesn’t remove chemicals such as limescale. Distillation goes beyond regular boiling. It works by boiling water into steam and then capturing the steam in a separate container. When the steam cools down, it turns back into water.

What will happen if drink polluted water?

Polluted water can have different effects depending on a variety of conditions. Some people could suffer no physical consequences while others could undergo serious illnesses. In other situations, death is also a possibility.

Factors that influence what will happen are the age and health of the person involved, the contaminant consumed, how much was consumed and how long the person has been drinking the water for. The effects can vary greatly if a person drinks contaminated water for a week versus a couple of months.

Health effects such as gastrointestinal and stomach related illnesses such as nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea are not unheard of.

The best way to stay safe is to install a water filtration system at home and only drink water from there. If you eat outside like at a restaurant, ask the waiter for bottled water or go one step further and ask them for filtered water to reduce your carbon footprint on the planet.

Installing a filtration system is seen as expensive, but it is much cheaper than a trip to the hospital.
